Update and my Android App

Android Logo

Finally, a long overdue update to my blog, my last update was back in April, and it is now early September and a lot has happened in the last few months. I’ve finished my second year of university and it was a pretty amazing year, thank you to everyone who made it so amazing.

On the placement front it hasn’t been going so well and I am currently still looking for a placement, I have a couple of applications out there which I am waiting to hear back from, if the placement hunt fails in the next couple of weeks, then unfortunately I will be looking to join the IT course at Derby University however the goal of getting into the game’s industry is still my main goal.

The main reason for this post is that I want to announce that I am working on a Android Application which I’ve been working on and off for the last couple of months and it’s still really early in the design process, but essentially it will be a quiz application, however there will be an element to it that I have yet to see in a mobile application which is a weekly “live” show, very similar to how 1 vs. 100 on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was.

I will be posting weekly updates about the application from this week onwards and posting screenshots whenever something is screenshot worthy.

Applied Game Development

Gamebryo Logo

In this module I have been put into a team of three programmers and five artists and we must work together to create a racing game using Emergent’s Gamebryo engine.

We call ourselves ‘Running Man Studios’, this is because we enjoy the film of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and because our game is very loosely based on the film.

The story aspect of the game is as follows, you can play as four different characters each one competing to win the race which will result in their freedom from jail, however the other three racers are also wanting to win. While you do spend most of the time racing against each other there is a section of the track known as the ‘Danger Zone’ which allows you to shoot the other character and for them to shoot you back.

For our alpha deadline which was at the end of last month we had implemented:

  • Basic AI Characters
  • Basic Lap System
  • Basic Wheel Physics
  • Multiple Map Support and Nodes
  • Menu System
  • Aiming System

There is still much more to be done and while there is some time left till our deadline I am still optimistic that we can reach the targets we set out after our first playable in week 6.

New Site and New Blog

Welcome to my new site! I decided to make a new site because I have no Web Development knowledge and thought using a tool as easy as Tumblr would be much easier, which it most certainly is! I will however be trying to create my own custom theme to add that personal touch =].

Over the next 2 days I will be blogging like crazy about what I’ve been up too on the Games Programming Course, how my search for a job placement is going and just for fun might write a review about Pokemon HeartGold (or what I’ve played so far anyways).

You will be able to get onto this site with my URL www.robert-h-davies.co.uk pretty soon I’m just waiting for the DNS to propagate so ill activate that link either tomorrow or Friday.

So i hope you enjoy the new site and check out some of my current and previous projects, ill be uploading the whole projects at the weekend.
